Improving IEEE 802.11 power saving mechanism

چکیده
This paper presents a mechanism that improves the energy efficiency of PSM (Power Saving Mechanism) specified for DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) in IEEE 802.11. In PSM, time is divided into beacon intervals. At the start of each beacon interval, every node stays awake for a duration, called the ATIM Window. During the ATIM window, nodes exchange control packets to determine whether they need to stay awake for the rest of the beacon interval. Past research results show that the size of the ATIM window has a significant impact on energy savings and throughput achieved by nodes. This paper proposes a simple mechanism that adjusts ATIM window size to improve the energy conservation of PSM. We also allow nodes to enter the doze state in the middle of beacon interval if they have completed all the transmissions that are explicitly announced during the ATIM window. Simulation results show that the proposed solution improves performance and energy savings over PSM in IEEE 802.11.

Performance Analysis of IP Paging Protocol in IEEE 802.11 Networks
Recently, IEEE 802.11 wireless networks have been widely deployed in public areas for mobile Internet services. In the public wireless LAN systems, paging function is necessary to support various advanced services (e.g. Voice over IP and message applications) and to provide efficient power management scheme. In next-generation mobile networks, the so-called all-IP networks, the paging function ...
متن کاملPower-Saving Protocols for IEEE 802.11-Based Multi-Hop Ad Hoc Networks
Power-saving is a critical issue for almost all kinds of portable devices. In this paper, we consider the design of power-saving protocols for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) that allow mobile hosts to switch to a low-power sleep mode. The MANETs being considered in this paper are characterized by unpredictable mobility, multi-hop communication, and no clock synchronization mechanism. In partic...

This paper presents an optimization of the power saving mechanism in the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) in IEEE 802.11 standard. In the 802.11 power saving mode specified for DCF, time is divided into so-called beacon intervals. At the start of each beacon interval, each node in the power saving mode periodically wakes up for a duration called the ATIM Window. The nodes are required to...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Power Saving Mechanism in IEEE 802.11 Networks to Support IP Paging Protocol
Terminal paging is a procedure to locate a called mobile host (MH), which registered only approximated location information. The paging aims to reduce signalling overhead and power consumption in the MH. Recently, IP paging protocol has been widely designed for the terminal paging in IP-based mobile networks. However, since any power save mechanism is not supported in IP layer by itself, it is ...
متن کاملA Distributed Mechanism for Power Saving in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs
The finite battery power of mobile computers represents one of the greatest limitations to the utility of portable computers. Furthermore, portable computers often need to perform power consuming activities, such as transmitting and receiving data by means of a random-access, wireless channel. The amount of power consumed to transfer the data on the wireless channel is negatively affected by th...
